It’s important to know exactly what not to do, as well as what to do when it comes to public relations. A bad PR moment is something that can really damage you or your client’s reputation, so it’s important to be careful and be respectful, at the very least. The rules of PR may get a little confusing: knowing what you can and can’t say is understandably troubling. That’s why the most important thing of all is to learn good public relations tactics and to avoid all the negative stuff.
The Do’s
Hire an agency
Don’t assume you can do it all on your own. You may not be able to apply all those good public relations tactics on your own. After all, that’s what a PR firm is there for. When you hire an excellent and reputable PR agency, make sure to communicate with them every step of the way. That’s a major DO.
That means keeping them in the loop about any sort of business decisions and changes, such as hours, services, menu changes, etc. Or perhaps you have a marketing tactic you want to run by them. Just schedule an appointment with them. They’ll tell you whether it is a good idea or not, but they will listen to you if you just communicate with them.
Consider visuals
The brand is a story. What better way to tell a story than visuals. The point is, you can’t go wrong with an appropriate picture or video. Humans are very visual people, and any visuals you provide help with your client’s engagement. This will be very beneficial for your PR team.
That’s why you should consider photo and/or video shoots. Getting some team photos together or even some shots/footage of your place of business, or the product is highly recommended. It’s a useful tool you can use with your press materials to build a strong campaign.
Be patient
It’s vital you understand that, even with good public relations tactics, your brand won’t become world famous overnight. Understand that PR is a branding opportunity and often takes time to build momentum. That’s perfectly acceptable, and there’s nothing to be concerned about if you feel like you’re not seeing results right away.
Similarly, you need to prepare yourself to be a part of the PR process. Not only is PR NOT an overnight result, but it’s a very hands-on process that takes months. Remember: we may have “crystal balls,” but they don’t work like you think they do.
