Writing is a useful tool for just about any industry. It is a way of communicating with a massive audience, and sometimes it’s easier than, say, giving a speech. PR is no different—in fact, we use writing in a few different formats. Two of those examples are copywriting and content writing, which people often get confused with each other. There is, however, a pretty big difference.
The Difference Between Copywriting and Content Writing
What is content writing?
Content writing is when you compose content that serves a purpose in marketing or commercial instances. Content writing is a specific aspect of marketing and is a great way to bring in leads and customers through interesting, engaging content oriented articles, blogs, or press releases.
Users are searching for certain content and that’s where your content marketing comes into play – you want them to find information on the topic you wrote about. Content marketing involves reach, which is using keywords and searchable phrases for people to easily find the content piece, whatever it may be, which connects to the company or product.
While copywriting and content marketing both have to do with marketing, one is written solely for attracting new users or customers.
What is copywriting?
Copywriting, or ad copy, is creating valuable content with a very specific purpose. The purpose is to sell your brand. It was once considered as just another aspect of advertising, but today it is much more than that. You may even see copywriting in the form of social media posts. They are meant more for branding than they are for content marketing.
Your brand is important. In other words, your brand is your voice, and you must communicate with your audience. Depending on your brand, you may use copywriting daily and never use content marketing, or vice versa. Wendy’s is a good example of a brand that is always using copywriting as their big push is advertising, but we don’t see them posting blogs or articles written by them about the brand or product. That’s the biggest different.
